| Short description: | The course includes detailed informations about the structure of the digestive tract of horses, the physiology of digestion as well as the characteristics of selected components of feed and feed used to feed horses. The rules for the selection of feed and the basic principles of nutrition and horses according to the principles of developing rations will be also discussed. The course extends the knowledge of feed additives, herbs, poisonous plants, and some diseases related to poor nutrition and current trends in horses nutrition. |
| Full description: | During the course, the student will get detailed informations about the construction of the gastrointestinal tract of horses, the physiology of digestion as well as the general characteristics of selected components of feed and feed used to feed horses. The rules for the selection of feed and the basic principles of feeding the horses, depending on age, sex, physiological status and direction of use and the basic principles of development of rations will be also discussed. In addition, the student will improve his knowledge about feed additives used in horses nutrition and the knowledge of the effects their application. The course extends the knowledge about poisonous plants and basic diseases related to poor nutrition. The student will get to know the current trends in horses nutrition, as well as knowledge on the use of herbs and supplements present on the Polish market and substances prohibited for use in nutrition of sport / competitive horses. |

| Learning outcomes: | After course completion In area of knowledge: 1. The student has a general knowledge of the structure and physiology of the digestive system of horses, a general knowledge about feed and additives used in horses nutrition, about plants poisonous and therapeutic plants and supplements available on the Polish market. 2. Student knows the purposes/aims the use of mathematical models in animal nutrition and is able to use them. In area of skills: 1. The student can make the choices of raw feed materials, additives and / or medicinal supplements to compose ration for selected groups of horses. 2. Student has the ability to construct, balancing and optimizing rations for a selected group of horses. 3. The student is able to propose the appropriate for the specific conditions for breeding and / or maintenance of horses feeding system. In area of social competences: 1. Student is aware of the consequences of improper feeding of horses. 2. Student is able to work in a team and manage a team, and take responsibility for the results his work. 3. Student is aware of the need for education and self-improvement in nutrition of horses. |
| Assessment methods and assessment criteria: | Evaluation of the exercises will be issued on the note of the project (in the form of a multimedia presentation, prepared by a 2-person teams) and report. Topics of projects are selected from pre-available list of issues; Student can propose on his own as well. The lecture part of the course will be evaluated on an exam (written form).If the exam is not passed in the first term, a student has a second chance to fix the note (written or oral form). The final note will be the average of the notes from exercises and the lecture note (50% : 50%). |
